Bangers from Down Under: The Butlers

Milky goodness for your eardrums Upon introduction to The Butlers, I wasn’t a massive fan. After hearing that Mako Road were performing at a charity gig in Christchurch I jumped at the chance to see them, not paying much attention to the other accompanying acts – including The Butlers. But I was very pleasantly surprised when they appeared on the makeshift stage area and began to play some cracking songs. The five-piece band is formed of Walt Robberds (vocals, rhythm guitar),

Bangers from Down Under: Mako Road

As of February 7th, 2019, I have been studying in Christchurch, New Zealand for a semester. Although New Zealand has a thriving, international reputation for beautiful lakes, impressive mountains and fantastic beaches, it is somewhat under-represented as a source of exciting new music. In fact, I would wager that most of you reading aren’t too familiar with modern Kiwi music (past Lorde, Kimbra and maybe even Flight of the Conchords). However, in my short time here so far, I

Mungo’s Hi-Fi to perform at Spanky Van Dyke’s

Beginning as a duo in 2000, the self-proclaimed ‘brainchild’ of two Glaswegian dance DJs has evolved to a five-person unit producing some of the most original, energetic reggae-dub hits this side of the millennium. Since building their original sound system from speakers found in a skip, this dancehall phenomenon has achieved massive expansion in terms of reputation and now boasts huge collaborations to its name, having worked with an expanse of artists ranging from Prince Fa

Reggae Take Over Presents Gentlemans Dub Club

Having only ever been to Spanky Van Dykes to for the best southern fried chicken that I’ve ever tasted or take full advantage of their 2-for-1 burgers on a Tuesday, I’ve gotta say I was a little skeptical on how they would transform the place into a venue fit for a gig, but they did it! The area looked completely different with its own stage area, an amazing sound system and plenty of room to skank around. The night was kicked off by DJ LOAO playing the best old school and ne

    Skindred @ Rock City, 06/11/15

The most energetic gig I’ve ever been to. When I arrived at Rock City for the act, the crowd was bustling and ready for a fight; well warmed up by the supporting acts. I have to admit, as someone who has been to a Skindred gig before, I was terrified of having to stand in the pit alone. Thankfully, I found a nice cosy spot on the balcony, and watched the madness commence. First of all I’d like to address the lead singer, Benjo Webbe’s, rather confusing and original dress sens

Skindred set to slay Rock City

Get ready to be amazed by Skindred’s high energy performance in Rock City this November. How would I describe Skindred? They’re a mix of everything you’d ever want from a Rock City gig, energetic, enthusiastic, and totally mesmerising. Having previously seen Skindred in 2011, I’ve been waiting for the chance to see their refreshing live performances again. With their combination of metal, reggae, and drum and bass, you better get your dancing shoes on, because it’s a guarante
