    Interview with Sundara Karma

After the successful release of their debut album “Youth is Only Ever Fun in Retrospect” at the start of the year (that reached the top 25 in the UK album charts) and a great festival season behind them, Sundara Karma are on the road again for a tour taking them across the UK and Europe. As the band set off for another tour following the release of their full debut album, their travels bring them to the always eventful venue Rock City right in the heart of Nottingham. The fou

    Festival Review: Oxjam Nottingham 2017

As some of you may, or may not know last Saturday on the 21st of October Nottingham held its annual Oxjam fest, celebrating local indie music and supporting a great cause. The night was split across two venues with the indie scene being splashed about the upper room of Spanky Van Dykes and the mellow folky vibes associated with yesteryear being represented in the Nottingham Trent watering hole: The Orange Tree. Growing up listening to the harsher side of the indie scene I nat

Clean Cut Kid @ Rescue Rooms

Clean Cut Kid returned to Nottingham for a sold-out show at the Rescue Rooms, quickly curing the crowd of their Monday blues. Leeds 4-piece Marsicans started off the night, introducing their quirky grooves to the audience. Self-described as ‘upbeat indie meets dirty pop’, the boys beamed throughout their whole set, slowly but surely warming up the audience to their tunes. Callum Beattie followed, belting out rock and roll tunes with his band and an array of colourful guitars.

    Jordan Rakei @ Rescue Rooms

On his first ever visit to Nottingham Jordan Rakei captivated Rescue Rooms with his soothing soul and beat-heavy grooves. Hailing from New Zealand and now residing in London, Rakei is a man of many talents. A multi-instrumentalist, surrounded by 5 other extremely talented musicians, the quality of music produced was incredible. Rakei gained success in the UK through collaborations with the likes of Tom Misch (which meant I recognised a few faces in the crowd  from Loyle Carne

    Interview with Emily Barker

We spoke to Emily Barker, the writer of  ‘Sweet Kind Of Blue’ who plays Nottingham’s Bodega on November 25th. Barker has penned and performed theme songs for BAFTA and Ivor Novello winning television dramas Wallander (starring Kenneth Branagh) and The Shadow Line and for the movie The Keeping Room, as well as an entire musical score for the poignant and well-received 2015 road movie, Hector, starring Peter Mullan. Would you say you prefer being in the studio recording new mat

Almost exactly a year since their last headline show at Bodega, Clean Cut Kid are back to play Rescue Rooms. The band have amassed a gang of loyal fans in Nottingham, having supported bands such as Fickle Friends, The Courteeners and Shura in Nottingham in recent years. Now armed with their debut album ‘Felt’, released back in April, the Liverpudlians are set to play Rescue Rooms on their biggest UK tour to date. The record is full of fuzzy, scuzzy, upbeat tracks, including f

Live and in Interview: The Pigeon Detectives @ Rock City

I joined David Best and Ryan Wilson from the The Pigeon Detectives shortly before their gig at Rock City celebrating the 10th anniversary of their iconic album Wait For Me. The two seemed quite surprised that they had an interview to start with as they had requested not to do any on this tour, but were happy to talk none the less (making this a bit of an exclusive). To start with we spoke about how the band has matured and progressed since the album was originally released in

The days are getting colder and the nights are drawing, but don’t pack your glitter and denim shorts away just yet… the festival season isn’t over! Join Oxjam Nottingham on Saturday 21st October 2017 at Spanky Van Dykes and the Orange Tree for a music festival with a difference and support a great cause. The Big Moon @ The Cookie, Leicester

On their biggest headline tour to date, The Big Moon made a stop at Leicester’s The Cookie. With its basement setting the venue was quick to sell out which created a close, sweaty atmosphere as the crowd anticipated the girls’ show. Opening the night was Leicester based Superego, fronted by Cam Potts, currently Marika Hackman’s guitarist (when The Big Moon aren’t backing her, of course). With their grungey guitar riffs and high energy sound they were the perfect way to open t

    Pale Waves @ Bodega

What a summer it’s been for Pale Waves. While they may not have broken into the limelight in full yet, those who know about the Manchester four-piece have reason to be excited. Frequent collaborations with ‘The 1975’, and a supporting slot on their US tour, have no doubt given the young indie-rockers a taste of what’s to come. After a hugely successful slot on the BBC introducing stage at Reading and Leeds this summer, it only seemed right that their first headline UK and Eur

    Loyle Carner @ Rescue Rooms

As Rescue Rooms opened its doors for Loyle Carner’s headline show on Tuesday, Brixton based Elisa Imperilee & Srigala proved the perfect warm up, setting the tone for the rest of the evening. The rich soulful tone of Elisa’s voice flirts with the listener as she craftily toys with the music effortlessly creating trills and key changes. Accompanying her is Srigala’s heavy bass and RnB beats amplifying a current sound common to numerous contemporary rappers. Heavily influenced

    Festival Review: Hockley Hustle

On the 8th of October Nottingham’s Hockley area played host to a variety of musicians, poets and DJs all in the aid of charity. The annual event has grown from strength to strength in the past 11 years, showcasing a variety of Nottingham based artists. From the UFO orchestra taking over the Contemporary Art Gallery to a silent disco filling Broad St, the overall atmosphere was infectious. With over 300 acts to choose from, attendees were spoilt for choice as they weaved their

    Flyte @ The Bodega

Following the release of the long-awaited debut album, The Loved Ones, Flyte are finally able to properly tour the UK. The band played the Bodega to a packed crowd, with fans making requests and chatting with the band throughout the night, it was an intimate affair. As a smaller venue, the Bodgea perfectly accentuated the intensity of the gig and produced an amazing sound quality. The band opened with single, Victoria Falls, a richly layered song with a break down that is rem

    The Amazons @ Rescue Rooms

Ending a crazy week that started with The Amazons first ever live lounge appearance on BBC 1 on Monday, stopping off at the Bodega for a DJ set Thursday, finally it was time for their long awaited, sold out show at Rescue Rooms on Friday 6th October. When tickets went on sale back in April they sold out in a matter of days, and the band had suggested moving to Rock City or even doing two dates at Rescue Rooms but said they had no way to fit it into their busy schedule. In a world, so full of repetitive pop and songs that race through their catchy choruses, it is often refreshing when a band takes it slow. Flyte relish the sweet enjoyment of their choral voices and soft acoustic tones. With their new debut album The Loved Ones being recently released, the band are ready to show that a little indulgence is never a bad thing. Recently released song, Cathy Come Home is a nostalgic Beatle-esque song full of longing yet always knowing where it is

    The Maccabees @ Alexandra Palace

It’s been 14 years since The Maccabees formed and they are accompanying their departure with a farewell tour, which ends in three nights at Alexandra Palace. I join them at their final Manchester show, where the atmosphere is rife with emotion. 14 years and four amazing albums have culminated in a richly diverse and loyal fan-base who have come out in full strength to see the band. From the jangly indie pop of their youth to the darker, more mature album Marks to Prove It, th

    Palace @ The Bodega

On Tuesday Palace returned to Nottingham for a sold out show at the Bodega. After releasing their debut EP Lost in the Night in 2014 their popularity has grown immensely as they become a staple act on the Indie scene. The laid back, relaxing sound of the London based four-piece continues to surprise it’s listener with bluesy undertones and hypnotic guitar riffs. Their clear chemistry when performing engages the audience, allowing them to be captivated by frontman Leo Wyndham’

    Circa Waves @ Rock City

Circa Waves are back, and back in a big way. With a new album, a largely sold out tour and major festival appearances surely on the horizon, the Liverpool band seem to not only have grown in terms of stature and popularity, but also in terms of themselves. Frontman Kieran Shudall in particular commanded the stage, had his army of adoring fans in a packed out Rock City responding to his every command, despite very little vocal interaction with his audience. With the opening he

The xx made their triumphant return to the UK at the Motorpoint Arena on Saturday night. After years of building anticipation and battling personal issues, they have reformed stronger than ever with a fresh sound. With their new album, I See You, the band have expanded their horizons and moved out of the introspective tone of the first two albums. Their concept transfered to the stage design as mirrors surrounded them from all sides, acting as a reflection of their album cove

Having formed in 2004 and first emerging in 2007 with their debut album ‘Wait For Me’, The Pigeon Detectives are showing that they’ve still got what it takes over ten years on with their fifth album ‘Broken Glances’. Despite the tremendous success of their first two, and with the former going platinum, they have tried to take a step in another direction following the release of their next two, gaining significantly less interest. Ditching the old grittier style of power chord
