    The Blinders @ The Bodega

After the successful release of their debut album ‘Columbia’, The Blinders have embarked on a UK tour, bringing their political punk rock music to The Bodega last night with support from Nottingham’s Those Howlin’ Sounds, and Calva Louise from London. First up were four-piece Those Howlin’ Sounds, who also released an album earlier this year. They opened with an instrumental song and had a grunge/punk feel to them. The crowd really enjoyed them and by the time their set finis

    Interview with Estrons

“You Say I’m Too Much, I Say You’re Not Enough” is the debut album by the alternative welsh band Estrons, and two days after the release, I talked with Rhodri, the guitarrist, right after an intimate and energetic live in-store performance in Rough Trade Nottingham and chatted about the new album, touring and aliens You guys have been touring a lot, how’s that been? It’s been great! Just came back from a european tour, it’s good to be in cities I’ve been to before. We were he

Hunter and the Bear @ The Bodega

Dubbed ‘The Heroes British Rock Needs Right Now’, I held high hopes for Hunter and the Bear’s live show and, let me tell you, they did not disappoint. The buzz in the Bodega’s intimate upstairs venue was something to behold. One thing to note is that Hunter and the Bear’s fans seem to be some of the friendliest people out there. Indeed, the crowd had the feel of a (very excited and slightly edgy) gathering of old friends, as fans of all ages chatted and joked around as they w

    Silver Wilson @ The Bodega

After having some trouble with a support act, Silver Wilson played their first headline show at The Bodega Nottingham on Saturday night, with support from Remy and Badminton. They brought their feel-good indie-pop vibes to an excited and energetic crowd. First up was last minute support Remy, winner of this years Notts factor. The recently turned eighteen-year-old played a mixture of his own songs and some covers which included Brittney Spears, Christina Aguilera and The Arct

    Cassia @ Rescue Rooms

Cassia have begun their UK tour after returning from playing in Europe, and they started it at Rescue Rooms in Nottingham. They were joined by The Mocking Jays and Manchester band Larkins and filled the venue with their chilled-out tropical indie vibes. First up were indie-pop band The Mocking Jays from Nottingham who have now played the Rescue Rooms stage twice this year. They’ve really been getting their name around the music scene and have played lots of shows and festival

    Deco @ The Bodega

Following a successful summer of festivals and the recent release of their new single “Upside Down”, Deco came home to headline a sold-out Bodega. Supporting were LUNAH (also known as Ben Mcconnachie) and Black Cats and Magpies. LUNAH- Photo credit unknown Opening the show was LUNAH, an indie-electronica music producer who recently produced the music for Deco’s latest song. He also invited singers Katie Cooper and Giulia onto the stage to perform the songs that he has produce

    Interview with Rae Morris

Daisy and Olivia chatted to Rae Morris before her gig last Saturday, the last in the tour of her second studio album, “Someone Out There”. “Glad to finally be here!” Rae laughs, weaving her way onto the bench in her bright red tracksuit an hour before her performance. Indeed, it has been a performance months in the making, having been moved from the original date in March to this chilly September day. After a couple of minutes of small talk, she elaborates. “It’s a bit odd to

    Pale Waves @ Rock City

Pale Waves returned to Nottingham on Tuesday night after they’d previously played an incredibly packed out set at this year’s Dot to Dot festival. Having only just released their debut album “My Mind Makes Noises” a couple of weeks ago, the Manchester four-piece have exploded onto the music scene, helped by The 1975’s Matt Healy, and don’t look to be slowing down any time soon. Starting the night off were angsty indie rock band- King Nun. They took a little while to settle in

Sleaford Mods at Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall

After a couple of years of listening to and trying to figure out Sleaford Mods and where they stand in today’s music scene and its decline in originality, it can be said with great certainty that Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearn are delivering ideas that are bold, new and often feared. As we watched the interesting choice of supporting band, Grey Hairs, an ostentatiously angry performance in which the seemingly passionate lyrics were drowned out by the rest of the band, it w

The Magic Gang, an indie boy band from Brighton who burst onto the music scene in 2014 with Shallow on SoundCloud, headlined Rock City on Saturday 29th as part of their UK tour.  The band have cited Weezer, their eponymous 1994 album in particular, as being a key influence on their sound, and have only grown in success and popularity since their beginning. They were supported by up and coming The Orielles and Sports Team and brought out a rowdy mix of teenagers and adults ali

The Night Cafe @ Rescue Rooms

Thursday night saw The Night Café bring their headline tour to Nottingham’s Rescue Rooms, one of our city’s finest intimate venues. With their intelligent lyrics and catchy riffs, barely three months after their EP ‘Bunkbed’ was released, this was a gig I’d been looking forward to for a long time. Supporting were Hartlepool group Plaza and Brighton band Chappaqua Wrestling – both were excellent choices, with Plaza’s moody dark beats and Chappaqua Wrestling’s old-school Kooks

    Spring King @ Rescue Rooms

Almost a month after the release of their second album “A Better Life”, Macclesfield band Spring King headlined Nottingham’s Rescue Rooms for the penultimate night of their UK tour. Their set was packed full of songs from both their albums, providing a great performance of non-stop energy. Starting the night were four-piece Ed The Dog. They played a variety of bouncy, upbeat, Wombat-esque songs and even branched into a Robbie Williams cover for a minute. The four all wore sma

Preview: Jorja Smith at Rock City

Jorja Smith, the twenty-one-year-old R&B singer from Walsall, will be performing to a sold-out Rock City on Sunday 14th October. Having recently released her debut album “Lost and Found”, Jorja Smith is taking the album on tour around the UK, Europe and North America. With influences from the likes of Amy Winehouse and The Streets, her sound brings a unique and refreshingly different vibe to the Nottingham music scene which is mostly dominated by indie/alternative artists. ASHFIELDS @ Rescue Rooms

Despite being touch and go as to whether the gig would go ahead, Ashfields return to Nottingham for the last time in a “very, very very long time” to headline Rescue Rooms with support from The Nix, Silver Wilson and George Gadd. George Gadd opened the show to a very empty venue, but that quickly began to fill when the music started to play. The heavy guitar combined with emotive vocals drew people in and couple with the jokey behaviour between songs led to a smooth performan

After the release of their sixth album “megaplex” on Friday 26thMarch, We Are Scientists returned to Rescue Rooms to display a mixture of their new music as well as their classic hits to a full venue. The Pale White have been supporting We Are Scientists on the majority of their shows but Indian Queens, a female two-piece from London, played the Nottingham date. They had sounds similar to the likes of Warpaint and energised the audience with their intense and ethereal music.

The Vamps took to the stage of the Motorpoint Arena during their Night & Day Tour. The set list filled with hits old and new was well received by the audience, especially newer songs “Staying Up” and “Middle of The Night” which both fuse the slick production of some of EDM’s finest, Matoma and Martin Jensen with the bands signature guitar pop sounds. There’s something special about the opening night of a tour. There’s also a certain excitement when a band releases their second album – to great anticipation. Put the two together in England’s finest live music venue, and you have one hell of a show. There is no more cliché a phrase than saying there was an electric atmosphere, but in a sold-out Rock City, there was an almighty buzz in the air (pardon the pun) as fans young and old awaited the young lads from Sydney to grace

    An Evening with Matt Maltese

London based singer-songwriter Matt Maltese has been heralded by many as being a voice for Britain’s disjointed generation. Aged just 21, he has spent the last two years crafting a brand which he has named “Brexit Pop,” – a carefully aligned mix of romanticism and cynicism amidst a backdrop of chaotic world affairs and complicated love scenarios. Ahead of the release of his debut record, Bad Contestant, Maltese has been supporting rising troubadour Isaac Gracie on his UK tour

On the landmark day of their album release, we welcomed the talented Brighton quintet, ‘Fickle Friends’, to Nottingham’s very own Rough Trade for a small, stripped back showcase. Unlike their extravagant, palm tree ridden setup at their Rescue Rooms performance in October, the Rough Trade stage was simple and compact. Stepping out, the band were a picture of happiness, relief and nervousness, as Natti joked about having never played a set like this before, usually taking shel

Edinburgh rock duo Man of Moon opened the show with a short set that showcased their intricate psychedelic sound. Second support act
