    EP Review: Exchecker – Exchecker

Cheshire-based hip-hop collective deliver an impenetrable statement of intent on their blossoming sophomore EP. Hip-hop has invariably been an illusive genre to conquer since the illustrious first golden age of the genre transformed music worldwide in the late 1980s. With its diversity, incalculable temperament and sweeping lyrical mindset, the brand has undergone more changes in its history than the presenters of Top Gear, yet at its core lies a primal set of foundations, a

    Acoustic Rooms Weekly: 01/04/19

Nearing the end of term, last night was The Mic’s penultimate night at Acoustic Rooms before the Easter break, and as always it delivered a diverse line up of talented musicians, showcasing local artists skills. Opening the night was Louis Croft who has previously performed at Acoustic Rooms and kicked off with a Jake Bugg feel and continued to play his original songs, ending on a more macabre note. Following Louis were Chris and Stella who also have played Acoustic Rooms be

    Acoustic Rooms Weekly: 25/03/19

Last night’s Acoustic Rooms saw a return to the more traditional open mic music, with singer/songwriters accompanied by their acoustic guitars dominating the evening. Opening the night was Tom Pryce who had been to Acoustic Rooms late last year. He opened with his song ‘Falling’ and then went on to play a couple more original songs which set the tone of a calm and laidback evening. Next up was Lee Moore who picked the pace up slightly with his cover of ‘Staying Out For The Su

    Acoustic Rooms Weekly 18/03/19

Even before Acoustic Rooms kicked off last night there was excitement in the air as not only were we joined by ITV’s The Voice who were going to be filming the performers throughout the night, Deaf Havana made a surprise visit ahead of their Rock City show tonight. The music kicked off with Omari who performed his usual jazz-rap style of spoken word to a chilled out backing track, keeping the atmosphere mellowed out while the audience settled down with their drinks. He starte

    Acoustic Rooms Weekly: 11/02/19

Opening the night this week at Acoustic Rooms was favourites Stella and Chris, who last played a couple of weeks ago. For those unfamiliar, the pair are characterised by Chris’ bluesy guitar riffs and Stella’s soulful vocals. Switching it up, they closed their set this time with a more upbeat jam they call ‘The Phoenix’ which proved popular with the crowd. The Mic crew were all excited for the second act of the night as it seems Luke Irwin has added some new tunes to his repe

Hobo Johnson & The Lovemakers @ Rock City

Hobo Johnson played a stunning, unpredictable set last week for a big crowd at Rock City. As soon as the lights went out, The Lovemakers were facing the crowd and we were all looking for the man himself, who showed up onstage just when his part in “Romeo & Juliet” came in, causing a big surprised roar in the audience. The social media sensation has proved himself worthy of not just having a powerful popular single going viral but making crowds sing the words to his whole albu

    Album Review: Brockhampton - 'Iridescence'

“The world’s greatest boy band” Brockhampton returned in September with their first album since signing to a major label (RCA) at the end of March this year. The young California-based hip-hop collective exploded onto the scene in 2017 with three superb albums as part of their ‘SATURATION’ trilogy and really seemed to be the next big act in hip-hop. On each of these albums, they showed they had great chemistry, song writing ability, an ear for ingenious production and were ca

Album Review: Danny Brown- Atrocity Exhibition

Danny Brown has always been one of the most eccentric rappers in today’s hip-hop scene. I’ve always found he had somewhat of a Jekyll and Hyde quality about him; capable of a chilled out, socially conscious track immediately followed by an outrageous hedonistically mindless party banger. That’s probably just proof of his versatility but for some reason, that stark contrast visible on his past albums has always stood out for me, more than any other artist. However, the Detroit

    Earl Sweatshirt – “I Don’t Like S**t, I Don’t Go Outside” album review

Five years ago he was a hot and bothered astronaut, jacking off to Asher Roth eating apple sauce. Earl was undeniably intelligent and a clever lyricist, but his 2010 release, ‘EARL’, was grotesque and it overshadowed his talent. Instead we saw an adolescent full of impotent potential, a parody of himself. With ‘IDLSIDGO’, Earl Sweatshirt has demonstrated an intriguing and exciting personal growth. To say that he has toned down his lifestyle would be unfair; in an interview wi
